the shot I really wanted was less than a minute before this as we drove through a sudden and brief downpour. the light and visibility got wild for a moment as we neared the end of the freeway here, headed into the sun same direction as this... driving took priority of course and couldn't get the GR out of pocket in time...

Super catch. I note you were in manual mode; if it was AF, my luck would have seen the droplets in focus and blur beyond, so kudos for effective control.
