redux (just for larger size, and a revisit...)

Old Town Chongqing. I've always loved this shot for the story, but my experience of it got tainted a bit early on. At the time was relatively new to and excited about photography and this shot, so posted it on a flickr critique group. At first it was a typical fun flickr comment thread with positive feedback, until somebody got on there and ripped the shot to absolute shreds... That's all fine and dandy especially since I was inviting it, but it crushed me at the time and I hastily removed the shot from flickr. For years couldn't think about the photo without remembering those heavy-handed criticisms. Even now it's a bit annoying that I can't skip remembering that experience, despite not caring a lick about whatever he was finding fault with. If ever asked would probably share this experience and recommend avoiding critiques of shots the newbie photog really enjoys, at least until the newbie honeymoon stage passes.

Yeah, there are always egofreaks who have no idea of constructive criticism, plus those who actually mean well but often come across the wrong way because of poor word choice/phrasing (I'm sure I've been guilty of the latter. Would very much like to have seen the critique you refer to. FWIW the engagement between these two is priceless and they are totally oblivious of your presence. I only have two suggestions. Maybe the darks could be lifted a tad for a bit more detail, plus a crop to eliminate the two blokes on the far left. Very judicious ie gentle application of a blur filter/vignette might lift the main couple even more, but I wouldn't want to lose too much of the background setting.
