By selective I mean I first let Topaz do its thing to a copy of the entire image then layer mask it in gimp to only apply the sharpening where I want it.

Looks quite aggressive from this picture, surprised Neo puts up with it so much given the relative sizes and the weaponry at his disposal.

When you say "selectively applied" ... who does the selection, user or software algorithm? Interesting result. Definitely a salvage given that the native focus is on the floor some feet away, but there's a narrow band of almost oversharpening from Obi's elbow to his mouth and Neo's tail.
