Worth trying for sure, I am guessing you get these fairly often at the moment so plenty of opportunity to practice.
These displays are not that common here but the one and only time I have tried I simply pointed at the sky at f8 or so, on bulb mode and waited for a few flashes before repeating. Having the ground and lights included would not have worked doing that mind.
In fact I just checked what I did, f11 ISO1600 and 3ish second exposures. The lightning itself is overexposed but there is some good detail around it in the clouds.
